About Straight Razors, Cut Throat Razors & Shavettes
Straight Razor or Shavette?
A straight razor, also called a cut throat razor or cutthroat razor, has a permanent blade that needs stropping and occasional honing. A shavette gives a similar open-blade shaving style but uses replaceable blades, making it easier to keep a sharp edge.
Blade Compatibility
Blade format matters. DOVO and many Parker shavettes use half of a standard double edge blade or a compatible single edge half blade. Feather Artist Club razors use dedicated Artist Club blades, which are longer and not the same as DE blades.
Accessories and Maintenance
Traditional straight razors need maintenance accessories such as strops, pastes and honing stones. For travel or storage, use a suitable case from shaving accessories and cases. Shavette users should keep the correct replacement blades ready before the current blade starts to tug.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a straight razor and a shavette?
A straight razor has a fixed blade that is maintained with a strop and occasional honing. A shavette uses replaceable blades, so it is simpler to keep sharp and is often used for barber-style shaving and edging.
Do shavettes use normal double edge blades?
Some shavettes use half of a standard double edge blade, but not all. Feather Artist Club razors use dedicated Artist Club blades, so always check the product page before buying replacements.
Do I need a strop for a straight razor?
Yes, a fixed-blade straight razor should be stropped before shaving to keep the edge aligned. Shavettes do not need a strop because the blade is replaced.
Which open-blade razor is best for beginners?
Many beginners find a shavette easier because there is no honing or stropping. Use a light touch, keep the shaving angle shallow and choose the correct compatible blade for the razor.

Muhle Closed Comb Black Safety Razor R106
Anyone familiar with Parker razors will know that, in general, they tend to be more on the aggressive side. The 78R is an exception. This is a mild/medium razor with barely any blade feel which, for a daily shaver (especially with sensitive skin) is a joy to use! Paired with a sharp blade (aren't they all??), (e.g. I used a Nacet blade, but, as always, YMMV) and a good-quality soap or cream, a smooth, comfortable, irritation-free shave is pretty much in the bag. Maybe not quite as ''autopilot'' as the Parker Aeroshave razor, but very close. For me, this razor is a 'keeper', and I'm so glad I bought it. If I had a 'gripe' it would be about the long, skinny handle; but when I consider all the positive things about this razor, the handle is hardly worth a mention. In any case, because it uses the standard M5 thread, it could always be swapped out for a different handle.
Many thanks, as usual, go to the good folk at MGS who, despite my ordering after the 3.00pm deadline, managed to get my well-wrapped parcel into the post for delivery the day after. Brilliant! Thank you!
For sure a mild razor - but that's what I like. For a daily shaver with sensitive skin this razor is pretty ideal. Paired with a decent blade (I used a Nacet blade, but others would be just as good), and a quality shaving soap or cream this is one of those 'autopilot' razors that doesn't demand 100% attention for every second of the shave; and being lightweight allows you to factor in your own level of pressure that is comfortable for you. It's nimble and manoeuvrable and getting those whiskers under the nose is a doddle. I don't chase BBS but the Aeroshave provides me with a DFS+ shave that lasts the day; and that I'm more than happy with.
With a blade gap of .59mm and a small amount of blade exposure this is definitely NOT a razor for mowing down several days' growth of beard, and nor should it be expected to; but if you shave on a daily basis - and have sensitive skin to boot - the Aeroshave is worth serious consideration. Horses for courses, and all that.
Service from the gentlefolk at MGS is excellent. I ordered this razor (along with another item) after the 3.00pm cut-off time and yet it still arrived, well packed and in good order, the following day! Thank you!
Many folks start their wet shaving addiction with the gateway drug that is the Merkur 34C. Now it’s back in satin finish stainless steel in a presentation box with a leather travel case. It’s also a little more efficient but not aggressive and the blade is now completely covered by the top cap. A genuine upgrade.
Super easy to use, ideal for new DE razor users, great quality, SO much better than multi blade cartridge razors, and much more economical. Highly recommended.
Seen the Henson AL13 reviewed quite a few times on YouTube and I thought I'd give it a try.Ive been shaving with a Rockwell T2 which is a excellent razor, but the AL13 is in a different league, lightweight easy to use,not got to worry about finding the correct angle to shave, the Henson does it for you, basically if you don't get the angle right,it won't shave...
Must add, first class service from Male grooming,Thank-you....
Does what it says, works for after shaving and for deodorant
Excellent just what I required. Male grooming great all round, many thanks
Tabac Original Shaving Soap Stick REFILL 100g
Inox base, solid. Just as discribed.
I'm usually used to using a heavy shaver for my daily shave. I thought about trying the Henson AL 13 v2 as I quite fancied a change. I was very surprised to find this shaver is very accurate to use almost surgical like. I quite fancy now perhaps trying to buy a Henson ti22 which is the titanium version. I most certainly recommend this company and this shaver highly. I will be using male grooming supplies again in future.
