The Merkur 985 is an open-comb double edge safety razor that separates for packing into its included leather case. Model 985000 is a compact travel format, measuring 70mm assembled and weighing 45g.
Choose it when small packed size matters and you prefer an open-comb head. The teeth are a physical head design, not an adjustable shaving setting. Its short handle will feel different from a full-length bathroom razor, so consider your usual grip before choosing.

Preparing for a Trip
Practise taking the razor apart and reassembling it at home before packing it. Follow the supplied instructions for fitting a blade and securing the components, keeping your fingers clear of the cutting edges.
After shaving, rinse away lather and hair, then clean and dry the razor before putting it into the leather case. Use light pressure as you become familiar with the shorter grip. A travel case is for storage; it does not change how carefully a blade must be handled.

This is a brilliant litle travel razor, packing down very small (the handle split into two parts that nest one inside the other for storage but screw together.
Tip: don't nest with the male thread facing the female, bcecuase they can then screw together like that in transit and be difficult to separate).
The razor head is identical to the 15c and 25c and is a truly great classic open comb design that is both gentle and highly efficient. When you get the angle right it will shave on a par with a Fatip open comb (but without its alignment problems) and just a fraction behind the closeness of the justly renowned Muhle R41, which however takes an experienced hand to avoid nicks and weepers, especially shaving against the grain. With the Merkur open comb, on the other hand, it's almost impossible to put a foot (or hand and chin) wrong. MGS delivered next day with perfect packaging. Highly recommended.
This is an excellent product. The comb is open and therefore you need to be attentive while shaving but the whole razor is super compact, comes in a tiny leather pouch while still feeling substantive while holding and using.
